Statue of Katsura Kogoro

The Statue of Katsura Kogoro stands beside Ichino Funairi and the Takase River in central Kyoto, honoring one of the leading figures of the Meiji Restoration.

Known later as Kido Takayoshi, Katsura Kogoro played a decisive role in forging the Satsuma–Choshu Alliance and guiding Japan through the transition from the Tokugawa shogunate to the modern Meiji state. His years in Kyoto were marked by political negotiations, dramatic escapes, and pivotal events that changed the course of Japanese history.

The bronze statue captures his determined character while overlooking one of Kyoto’s most historic districts.

History

Katsura Kogoro (1833–1877) was born into the Choshu Domain and became one of the foremost disciples of Yoshida Shoin. During the final years of the Tokugawa shogunate, he emerged as a leading advocate for political reform and imperial restoration.

Working alongside Sakamoto Ryoma, he helped conclude the historic Satsuma–Choshu Alliance in 1866, creating the political foundation for the Meiji Restoration. After the new government was established, he adopted the name Kido Takayoshi and became one of the principal architects of modern Japan.

The statue commemorates his achievements and his close connection with Kyoto, where many of the defining events of his life unfolded.
