Restaurant KIKUSUI is a historic dining establishment standing at the eastern end of Shijo Bridge in Kyoto’s Gion district. Completed in 1926 and designed by architect Jiro Matsumura, the building is one of Kyoto’s finest surviving examples of early twentieth-century commercial architecture.

History

Restaurant KIKUSUI was completed in 1926 during a period when Western-style restaurants were becoming an important part of Kyoto’s modern urban culture.

Architect Jiro Matsumura, known for designing numerous commercial buildings in Kyoto, created a sophisticated structure incorporating contemporary architectural trends while harmonizing with the surrounding historic cityscape.
