The Former Maekawa Residence is one of the most important historic sites associated with the Shinsengumi in Kyoto. Together with the nearby Yagi Family Residence, this traditional townhouse served as one of the organization’s first headquarters after its arrival in Kyoto in 1863.
Leaders including Kondo Isami, Hijikata Toshizo, and many other members of the Shinsengumi are believed to have lived and worked here while carrying out security duties in Kyoto during the turbulent final years of the Tokugawa shogunate.
Today, parts of the historic residence remain, preserving the atmosphere of the Bakumatsu period and offering visitors a glimpse into the early history of the Shinsengumi.
History
The Former Maekawa Residence was built during the late Edo period as a merchant’s residence.
When the Shinsengumi (then known as the Mibu Roshigumi) arrived in Kyoto in 1863, the house became one of their principal headquarters alongside the nearby Yagi Family Residence.
Following the assassination of Serizawa Kamo at the Yagi Residence, the organization continued to operate from this area before eventually relocating its headquarters to Nishi Hongan-ji Temple as its membership expanded.
Today, the surviving gate and portions of the residence remain as valuable reminders of Kyoto’s Bakumatsu history.
