Kosho-ji Temple

Temple

Kosho-ji Temple is the head temple of the Kosho-ha branch of Jodo Shinshu (True Pure Land Buddhism), located just southwest of Nishi Hongan-ji in central Kyoto. With its spacious grounds and impressive wooden halls, the temple offers visitors a peaceful atmosphere while preserving centuries of Buddhist tradition.

The temple complex includes magnificent halls dedicated to Shinran and Amida Buddha, along with historic gates and seasonal gardens. Although close to many popular attractions, Kosho-ji remains a quiet place where visitors can experience the spiritual heritage of Jodo Shinshu.

History

Kosho-ji traces its origins to the Kamakura period, when it was established to preserve the teachings of Shinran, the founder of Jodo Shinshu.

During the time of Rennyo, the eighth head of Hongan-ji, the temple played an important role in spreading Pure Land Buddhism throughout Japan. In 1591, following the urban redevelopment of Kyoto under Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the temple was relocated to its present site.

Today, Kosho-ji serves as the headquarters of the Kosho-ha branch of Jodo Shinshu, welcoming worshippers from across the country while preserving several historically significant buildings.
