Otonashi Waterfall

Otonashi Waterfall is a peaceful waterfall hidden in the forest behind Raigo-in Temple in Ohara. Cascading about 10 meters over moss-covered rocks, it has long been regarded as a sacred place for Buddhist practice. Surrounded by towering cedar trees and the sounds of nature, the waterfall offers one of the most tranquil settings in northern Kyoto.

Unlike the more famous temples nearby, Otonashi Waterfall remains relatively uncrowded. The gentle sound of flowing water and the cool mountain air create a refreshing atmosphere, making it an ideal destination for visitors seeking a quieter side of Kyoto.

History

According to tradition, the monk Ryōnin, founder of the Yūzū Nenbutsu school of Buddhism, practiced chanting at this waterfall. It is said that his sacred Shōmyō (Buddhist chanting) blended so perfectly with the sound of the falling water that the waterfall itself seemed to become silent. This legend gave the site its name, Otonashi, meaning “soundless.”

For centuries, the temples of Ohara have served as important centers of Tendai Buddhism and Buddhist chanting. Otonashi Waterfall continues to symbolize the spiritual harmony between nature and religious practice that characterizes this historic mountain village.
