Kyoto Station

Tourist Spot

Kyoto Station is far more than a transportation hub—it’s one of Japan’s most impressive examples of contemporary architecture. Serving JR lines, the Tokaido Shinkansen, Kintetsu Railway, and the Kyoto Municipal Subway, it is the main gateway to Kyoto for millions of visitors each year.

Completed in 1997, the station building is an enormous complex of glass, steel, and open spaces that contrasts dramatically with Kyoto’s historic temples and shrines. Inside, visitors will find department stores, hotels, restaurants, theaters, observation decks, and shopping arcades, making Kyoto Station a destination in its own right.

History

Kyoto’s first railway station opened in 1877, shortly after rail service reached the city from Osaka. As passenger numbers grew throughout the twentieth century, the station was rebuilt several times before the current structure was completed in 1997 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Kyoto’s city government.

Designed by internationally acclaimed architect Hiroshi Hara, the station symbolizes the connection between Kyoto’s rich cultural heritage and its modern future. Although its bold design was initially controversial, it is now widely recognized as one of Japan’s most important works of modern architecture.
