Nene-no-Michi

Nene-no-Michi is a charming stone-paved walking street in Kyoto’s Higashiyama district, connecting Kōdai-ji Temple with Maruyama Park. Named after Nene, the wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the street offers a peaceful stroll through one of Kyoto’s best-preserved historic neighborhoods.

Lined with traditional architecture, seasonal greenery, and famous cultural sites, Nene-no-Michi provides a quieter alternative to the busy streets around Kiyomizu-dera. It is an ideal place to experience the elegant atmosphere of old Kyoto while exploring the Higashiyama area on foot.

History

The street was named in honor of Nene, who founded nearby Kōdai-ji Temple in memory of her husband, Toyotomi Hideyoshi. As part of Kyoto’s efforts to preserve the historic landscape of Higashiyama, the area was carefully redesigned with stone paving, traditional architecture, and attractive landscaping.

Today, Nene-no-Michi links several of Higashiyama’s most important cultural attractions, including Kōdai-ji, Entoku-in, Ishibei-koji, and Ryozen Kannon, making it one of the district’s most enjoyable walking routes.

Visit Tips

Nene-no-Michi is an excellent route for exploring the Higashiyama district on foot. Although located close to Kyoto’s busiest sightseeing areas, it is usually less crowded than Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka, making it perfect for a relaxed walk.

Early morning is the best time for photography, when the stone-paved street is peaceful and bathed in soft light. Many visitors continue on to Kōdai-ji, Entoku-in, Ishibei-koji, Maruyama Park, and Yasaka Shrine to enjoy one of Kyoto’s most scenic walking routes.
