History

The museum opened in 1970 to preserve and present the history of the Meiji Restoration. Standing beside Kyoto Ryozen Gokoku Shrine and Ryozen Cemetery, it complements these historic sites by providing historical context through carefully curated exhibitions.

Its collection includes authentic letters, swords, personal belongings, photographs, and historical records connected with the final years of the Edo period. Special exhibitions are held regularly, allowing returning visitors to discover new aspects of Japanese history.

Visit Tips

The museum is especially rewarding for visitors interested in the Bakumatsu period, Sakamoto Ryōma, or the Shinsengumi. Although compact in size, most visitors spend around an hour exploring the permanent and special exhibitions.

After visiting the museum, continue on foot to Kyoto Ryozen Gokoku Shrine, Ryozen Cemetery, Ryozen Kannon, or Kōdai-ji to experience the historical atmosphere of Higashiyama. Checking the current special exhibition before your visit can make the experience even more enjoyable.
