Homman-ji Temple

Homman-ji Temple is a head temple of the Nichiren sect located near the eastern side of the Kyoto Imperial Palace. Founded in the Muromachi period, it is renowned for its tranquil atmosphere and its magnificent weeping cherry tree, which is traditionally regarded as the parent tree of the famous Gion Weeping Cherry in Maruyama Park.

Surrounded by the quiet streets of Teramachi and the greenery of the Kyoto Imperial Palace, the temple provides a peaceful retreat where visitors can appreciate both Buddhist history and Kyoto’s seasonal beauty.

History

Homman-ji was founded in 1410 by the Nichiren priest Nisshu.

Throughout the Muromachi and Edo periods, the temple developed into one of Kyoto’s important Nichiren temples. Despite suffering damage from wars and fires, it was repeatedly rebuilt and continues to serve as an active place of worship.

Today, the temple is especially famous for its impressive weeping cherry tree, believed to be the original tree from which the celebrated Gion Shidare-zakura of Maruyama Park was propagated. Every spring, it attracts photographers and cherry blossom enthusiasts from across Japan.
