Jorin-ji Temple

Temple

Jorin-ji Temple is a peaceful Jodo (Pure Land) Buddhist temple located near Demachiyanagi Station and the famous Kamo River Delta. Best known as Kyoto’s “Bush Clover Temple,” it attracts visitors each autumn when hundreds of bush clover (hagi) plants bloom throughout the temple grounds.

Although relatively small, the temple offers a tranquil atmosphere and is an excellent stop for travelers exploring nearby Shimogamo Shrine, Tadasu no Mori Forest, and the scenic riverbanks of northern Kyoto.

History

Jorin-ji was founded in 1573 by the Buddhist priest Nenyo Bunpa during the Azuchi-Momoyama period. Over the centuries, it developed into a respected temple of the Jodo school while maintaining close ties with the local community.

Its name is said to have been inspired by Donglin Temple on China’s Mount Lu, reflecting the Pure Land tradition’s historical connections with Chinese Buddhism. Today, the temple is especially celebrated for its seasonal bush clover garden.
