Sanzen-in Temple

Sanzen-in Temple is the most celebrated temple in Ohara, a peaceful rural valley in the northern mountains of Kyoto. Surrounded by ancient cedar trees, moss-covered gardens, and seasonal flowers, this prestigious Tendai temple offers one of Kyoto’s most tranquil and picturesque landscapes. It is especially famous for its charming stone Jizō statues nestled among the moss, creating one of the city’s most beloved garden scenes.

History

Sanzen-in traces its origins to a small temple founded by the Buddhist monk Saichō in the early Heian period. Over the centuries, it became one of the prestigious Monzeki temples of the Tendai school, where members of the imperial family traditionally served as abbots. After moving several times within Kyoto, the temple was relocated to its present site in Ohara during the Meiji period.

One of its greatest treasures is Ojo Gokuraku-in Hall, originally built during the Heian period. The hall houses a National Treasure triad of Amida Buddha statues, making Sanzen-in an important destination for both religious devotion and Japanese art history.

Visit Tips

Allow at least one to two hours to fully appreciate the temple grounds and gardens. Early morning is the most peaceful time to visit, when the moss gardens and cedar forests are especially quiet and atmospheric.
