Shorin-in Temple

Temple

Shorin-in Temple is a historic Tendai Buddhist temple in Ohara, best known as one of the birthplaces of Shōmyō, the traditional style of Buddhist chant in Japan. Located just a short walk from Sanzen-in Temple, it offers a peaceful atmosphere where visitors can experience the quiet beauty of rural Kyoto away from larger crowds.

Although modest in size, Shorin-in holds great religious and cultural importance. Its Main Hall enshrines an Important Cultural Property, and the surrounding gardens and mountain scenery create a tranquil setting that changes beautifully with the seasons.

History

Shorin-in was founded in 1013 by the monk Jakugen as a place for Pure Land Buddhist practice. During the Heian period, it became closely associated with the development of Shōmyō, the ceremonial chanting tradition used in Japanese Buddhism.

The temple is particularly connected with the monk Ryōnin, whose promotion of Buddhist chanting helped establish Shorin-in as an important center of religious music. Today, the temple continues to preserve this tradition through memorial services and special ceremonies.
