Yata-dera Temple (Yata Jizo)

Temple

Yata-dera Temple, officially known as Kongozan Gokuraku-in Yata-dera, is a Jodo Buddhist temple located along Teramachi Street in central Kyoto. It is best known as the home of Yata Jizo, a beloved guardian deity believed to take on the suffering of worshippers in their place.

For centuries, people have visited the temple to pray for protection from illness, recovery, longevity, and relief from hardship. Although situated in the heart of Kyoto’s shopping district, the temple provides a peaceful place for quiet prayer and reflection.

Yata-dera is also one of the temples visited during Kyoto’s traditional Roku Jizo Pilgrimage in August.

History

Yata-dera is believed to have been founded during the early Heian period.

Named after the famous Yata-dera Temple in Nara, it became an important center of Jizo worship in Kyoto. Its principal image, known as the Substitute Jizo, has long been revered for taking on the suffering and misfortune of worshippers.

During the Edo period, the temple gained widespread popularity among ordinary townspeople, and today it continues to welcome visitors seeking health, safety, and spiritual comfort.
