Ninenzaka Slope is one of Kyoto’s most charming historic streets, leading toward Kiyomizu-dera Temple through the heart of the Higashiyama district. Lined with traditional wooden townhouses, souvenir shops, cafés, and local sweet shops, it offers visitors a classic Kyoto walking experience.

The beautifully preserved stone-paved street captures the atmosphere of old Kyoto, making it one of the city’s most popular places for sightseeing and photography. Every season brings a different charm, from spring blossoms and fresh greenery to vibrant autumn colors and occasional winter snow.

History

For centuries, Ninenzaka has served as part of the approach to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, welcoming countless pilgrims and visitors. The traditional streetscape seen today was largely developed during the Edo and Meiji periods.

The surrounding neighborhood is designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, helping preserve Kyoto’s historic architecture and atmosphere for future generations.

Visit Tips

Ninenzaka is one of Kyoto’s busiest sightseeing streets, especially during the afternoon. For quieter walks and the best photography, arrive early in the morning before large tour groups fill the area.

The stone pavement can be uneven in places, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Many visitors combine Ninenzaka with nearby Sannenzaka, Kiyomizu-dera, Yasaka Pagoda, Kōdai-ji, and Ishibei-koji to enjoy one of Kyoto’s finest walking routes.
