Pontocho

Tourist Spot

Pontocho is one of Kyoto’s most famous entertainment districts, running along a narrow alley between the Kamogawa River and Kiyamachi Street. Lined with beautifully preserved wooden townhouses, traditional restaurants, bars, and teahouses, it offers one of the city’s most atmospheric walks, especially after sunset.

As one of Kyoto’s five historic geisha districts, Pontocho continues to preserve traditional performing arts and refined dining culture. During the summer months, many restaurants open riverside terraces (kawayuka), allowing guests to enjoy Kyoto cuisine while overlooking the Kamogawa River.

History

Pontocho developed during the early Edo period on land reclaimed from the banks of the Kamogawa River. Over time, restaurants and teahouses flourished, transforming the area into one of Kyoto’s leading entertainment districts.

The district remains closely associated with Kyoto’s traditional arts, with performances centered around the Pontocho Kaburenjo Theater. Strict preservation efforts have helped retain the area’s historic streetscape, making it one of the city’s best places to experience traditional Kyoto.

Pontocho is at its most beautiful in the evening, when lanterns illuminate the narrow alley and restaurants come alive. If you plan to dine at one of the district’s famous restaurants, making a reservation is highly recommended.

Because the alley is narrow and includes private businesses and residences, visitors should be considerate when taking photographs or walking through the area.
