Hoju-ji Temple

Hoju-ji Temple is a quiet Buddhist temple in Kyoto’s Higashiyama district, closely associated with Emperor Go-Shirakawa, one of the most influential rulers of the late Heian period. Located just a short walk from Sanjusangen-do, the temple stands on part of the former site of the magnificent Hojuji Palace, which once served as the political and cultural center of imperial rule.

Today, Hoju-ji offers a peaceful atmosphere where visitors can discover an often-overlooked chapter of Kyoto’s history. The temple enshrines images associated with protection, good fortune, and the memory of Emperor Go-Shirakawa, providing a fascinating contrast to the grand monuments nearby.

History

The origins of Hoju-ji date back to the Heian period, when the site formed part of the vast Hojuji Palace, originally established on the estate of the nobleman Fujiwara no Tamemitsu. In the twelfth century, Retired Emperor Go-Shirakawa transformed the area into the center of his system of cloistered rule (insei), constructing palaces, temples, and ceremonial halls that made Hojuji one of Kyoto’s most important political and cultural districts.

Most of the palace complex was destroyed during later wars and fires, but Hoju-ji preserves the memory of this remarkable period in Japanese history. Nearby Sanjusangen-do was originally built as part of the Hojuji Palace complex, making these two sites closely connected.
